25TH MAY 2024

On Saturday 25th May Huskisson Vincentia Football Club hosted a Super Derby. This is the first time that Shoalhaven District Football Association has scheduled all three grades of Seniors Mens plus both grades of Senior Women on the same day. It also happened to coincide with the A-league Final and the FA Cup Final – so a monstrous day of football with 5 exciting senior games, mini-games for the kids in between senior games and good food and music well into the night. Third Grade men kicked off the afternoon at 12pm with an intensely fought match that would set the tone for the day. Half-time saw the two sides at 1-1 with goals for Hayden Mussen (Basin) and Lachlan Szabo (Husky). The second half did not see any reduction in the intensity with two further goals from Husky (Szabo and Jayden Wright) and two further goals from Basin with Tom Schofield scoring and then Chris Brown heading in an equaliser in the final minutes of the game off a free kick from Jack Eastwood.

Reserve Grade ladies were the next to take to the pitch. It has been a tricky season for our ladies with a last minute grading decision from SDFA resulting in the Club having to scramble to recruit enough players to be able to field two teams. With a lot of brand new players in Reserve Grade, the girls have been slowly increasing their individual skills and team cohesion under the guidance of coach, David Farrow. Huskisson’s Alyse Brusamarello scored in the first half and then, despite the relentless efforts from the Basin girls, Husky were able to hold their 1-0 lead until the final whistle.

The Reserve Grade Men’s game was a highly anticipated game with both teams at the top of the ladder and both teams housing mates from Vincentia High’s Football (Soccer) Team. Husky burst off the mark in the opening minutes with an intensity and determination that showed everyone they were out to claim a win at home. At half-time Husky commanded a 2-0 lead with goals from Josh Fuz and Connor Chamberlain, much to the shock of the Basin spectators who have come to know this team for their swift, skilled play that has earned them their spot on the ladder. Coming out in the second half, the Basin supporters were pumped to see the boys lift and play at the level we have come to know them for. A penalty gave Basin’s Kingsley Smith the opportunity to bring the team within a point of Husky. Despite relentless attacks from both sides, the score remained 2-1 to Husky at full-time. One of the inadvertent benefits of the renowned Husky-Basin rivalry is that it creates a culture in which the young players push it other to perform at higher and higher levels. The recent Vincentia High School Soccer Team’s 10-0 semi-final win in the Senior Boys Puma Cup, with team made up in large by players from Basin and Husky FC, is a testament to the quality of player this rivalry has produced! (And appropriately, the team is coached by an ex-Basin Junior/ex-Husky Senior player).

First Grade Ladies faced a tough opponent in the Husky team. Basin defended beautifully, keeping Husky at pay for the first 40 minutes of the game until Husky was finally able to capitalise on a corner kick, followed by a skillful run through the 18 yard box by Alyse Brusamarello to slot one past the keeper. Happy to go to half-time with only a 1 goal deficit, our hopes for a comeback were quickly made that much harder by a Husky goal in the opening minutes of the second half by Pearl Rohrt. Rohrt grabbed herself a brace 20 minutes later and a final goal from Sophie Lymbery left Basin with a 4-0 defeat, despite an admirable effort.

The Super Derby Day finished with the much anticipated First Grade Men’s match. With Husky clearly riding the wave of an energised home ground, it was almost inconceivable to the Basin supporters when, within the opening minutes of the game, a slip up in the back line resulted in a Husky taking quick advantage with Robbie Flemons scoring the first goal of the match. This was the scare that the team needed and Basin quickly kicked into gear, with midfielder Ben Wright scoring an absolute screamer off his left foot just 10 minutes later. At the 35 minute mark, Basin had an opportunity to take the lead after being awarded a penalty kick, however an impressive save from Husky Keeper, Chris Tweed, kept the teams level. Not to be denied the lead, Basin scored a few minutes later with a corner kick from Dane McGinn being finished off by Brenden Apperley. Despite the ongoing efforts and sustained intensity for the remainder of the match, the score remained a 1-2 Basin win, bringing the team up to 3rd on the ladder.
This weekend, June 1st, Basin First Grade, Reserve Grade and Third Grade White will take on Culburra at home whilst Third Grade Red will take on Sussex at Bomaderry.
